Every page of Arthur’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
While his parents walked to church, Arthur noticed a tiny tomte beside the old chest. He caught the visitor in a butterfly net. The tomte frowned; this was no way to welcome a guest. The tomte spoke, and Arthur began to shrink. His clothes and wooden clogs shrank too, while chair legs rose like trees. Suddenly the tiny visitor stood as tall as Arthur himself. What a change! Wild geese called overhead, and Morten the white farm gander spread his wings. Tiny Arthur held his neck as they lifted off. The farm dwindled below, and an extraordinary journey opened across the sky. At dusk, the flock landed on a great frozen lake. Old Akka inspected Arthur with a stern eye. Though the geese towered above him, he answered politely. At last, she let him stay. In the night, Smirre the fox seized a sleeping goose. Arthur tugged his bushy tail until the goose escaped, then scrambled into a beech tree. Below, Smirre circled; above, the little traveller waited safely. At Kullaberg, the cranes danced while every animal kept the day’s peace. Tiny Arthur watched their long legs step and turn. He listened quietly, beginning to understand a world much larger than himself. Autumn brought them home to Skåne. Arthur ran towards the farmyard calling for his parents, and began to grow. His cap, clothes and clogs grew too; the familiar fence no longer seemed so enormous. Full-sized again, Arthur went to the shore at dawn. Old Akka circled low in farewell before the wild geese flew south. He watched until their wings became small bright marks above the sea.
