Every morning, twelve pairs of dancing shoes lay worn through beside the princesses’ beds. The king could not understand it. Ivy, the youngest princess, looked at her slippers and kept the wonderful secret close. That evening, a kind old soldier came to watch by the bedroom door. The king hoped he would solve the mystery. Ivy wondered what he might see when the palace lamps finally grew dim. Dressed for the ball, the eldest princess tapped her bedpost three times. The bed sank gently, revealing a secret stair. Ivy followed her sisters down, while the hidden watcher slipped quietly behind them. They walked between trees whose silver leaves chimed softly. A twig snapped with a sharp crack. Ivy paused and listened, but her sisters hurried on. Ahead, another wood gleamed with leaves of gold. Beyond the golden wood, diamond leaves glittered like frost. Another twig cracked, and Ivy felt sure somebody followed them. She looked back between the shining branches, seeing only shadows along the secret path. At a dark lake, twelve little boats waited with twelve young princes. Ivy climbed into the last boat. Its rower wondered why it felt so heavy. Beside them, ripples carried the moonlight towards the castle. Drums and trumpets welcomed the dancers into the underground hall. Ivy twirled in her rose-pink gown until long after midnight. The music was wonderful, but her satin slippers were growing thin once more. At morning, the watcher showed the king silver, gold and diamond twigs. Ivy stepped forward and told the whole secret herself. Her honest words broke the spell, and the palace welcomed an ordinary peaceful night.
