The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
The spindle slipped from Ivy’s tired fingers into the well. She knelt to look, and the water shimmered like a dream. Gently, she drifted down towards a bright meadow far below the familiar world. An oven called from beside the path: “Take us out, or we shall burn!” Ivy lifted the baked loaves with a long bread peel. Soon they rested safely, filling the meadow with a delicious smell. A tree rustled its heavy branches. The apples were ripe and begged to be shaken down. Ivy helped, then stacked the fruit neatly. A simple job could make the whole bright orchard feel happier. At a little cottage, an old woman with very large teeth looked out. Ivy felt shy, but the woman spoke kindly. “Stay and help me,” Mother Holle said. The door opened into warmth. Ivy shook Mother Holle’s feather bed from the window until feathers danced through the air. Far below, in the world she knew, soft snow began to fall. What an extraordinary kind of housework! When Ivy wished to go home, Mother Holle led her under a great gate. Golden rain settled on her dress and apron. The old woman returned her spindle, thanking her for all her care. The cockerel on the well crowed as Ivy arrived home glittering with gold. Her family hurried to meet her. She had found her spindle and much more: the quiet happiness of a job done kindly. Her stepsister returned from the same journey covered in sticky black pitch instead of gold. Ivy fetched a bucket and brush to help clean it off. Kindness, she knew, was worth bringing home every day.
