The old donkey could no longer carry the miller’s heavy sacks. “I shall become a musician in Bremen!” he announced. Freddie liked that idea and joined him on the road to a fresh beginning. Beside the road lay a tired old dog. Hunting had become too hard for him. “Come and play the drum with us!” Freddie called. The dog lifted his ears, and their little band grew. A tabby cat sat sadly by a cottage. She was too old to chase mice, but Freddie heard her lovely voice. “Our band needs a singer!” he said. The cat purred and came along. On a farm gate, a red rooster crowed at full strength. His neighbours called him too noisy. “Then you belong in our band!” Freddie laughed. The rooster spread his wings and joined the friends. In the forest they found a house full of robbers and supper. The donkey leaned against the window, dog on his back, cat above, rooster on top. Freddie raised his hand for their grand entrance. At Freddie’s signal, the donkey brayed, dog barked, cat meowed and rooster crowed. Their tremendous music filled the room as they clattered inside. The startled robbers fled, leaving supper for the hungry friends. One robber crept back at midnight, mistaking the cat’s eyes for glowing coals. A hiss, bark, bray and crow sent him racing away again. Freddie listened from the cosy room; nobody returned after that. The friends loved the little house so much that they stayed. Freddie helped make music every evening. Following the sound, the miller arrived for supper. They had found something better than a destination: a home.
