Every page of Rose’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
At bedtime, Rose sat up in the nearest bed and pointed across the nursery. By the window, a loose shadow flickered and wriggled, refusing to lie down flat like a proper shadow. Rose held her breath, curious rather than afraid. Tap, tap! A boy who never grew up crouched at Rose’s window, smiling beneath a green cap. He tossed a sprinkle of fairy dust into the air, and Rose floated out over the moonlit rooftops, laughing with surprise. At first, Rose flew with wobbly elbows, twisty knees, and a most undignified squeak. Then Rose stretched both arms forward, and the whole city dropped away below like a twinkling blanket. “I am doing it!” Rose called. Rose flew over Neverland, where a silver lagoon shone beside a tiny ship. Under the great trees, the lost children waved from their leafy hideout. Rose swooped low to meet them, grinning at their noisy welcome. All night Rose flew past the second star to the right and straight on until morning. Clouds rolled beneath Rose like soft hills, while one bright star guided the way. Rose watched dawn begin to blush at the horizon. Rose climbed down a hollow tree to the lost children’s home. Their supper was imaginary, but it tasted of whatever Rose wished for most. Nobody had to go to bed, and Rose laughed at that splendid rule. One sunny afternoon, Rose visited the lagoon’s mermaids. They were beautiful, rude, and terribly pleased with themselves. When one pinched a hat and swam away laughing, Rose decided they were not to be trusted with anybody’s hat. While Rose was away at the lagoon, pirates crept to the lost children’s home. They marched the lost children across the beach toward a rowing boat and the captain’s ship. Rose spotted them from behind a rock and whispered, “I will bring you back.” Rose slipped past the pirate crew on the captain’s ship, quiet as a moonbeam. A ticking crocodile bobbed in the water below, and the captain jumped away from its cheerful tick-tock. While everyone stared, Rose led the lost children safely to freedom. At last, Rose knew it was time to fly home. Rose waved to the boy in green and promised, “I will come back for holidays!” Then Rose sailed toward the warm, lit nursery window, carrying Neverland’s sparkle in every smile.
