A red flower opened on the windowsill, and tiny Freya sat inside its petals. She was no taller than a thumb. The woman who had planted it laughed with joy at her wonderful visitor. One moonlit night, a toad hopped through a broken window. She carried away Freya’s walnut-shell cradle for her son. Tiny Freya slept through the journey, while the garden slipped quietly behind them. Freya woke on a lily leaf in the stream. The toads croaked on the muddy bank, and she felt lonely. All around her, leaves seemed enormous. She watched the moving water and hoped for help. Winter snowflakes drifted down, each almost as big as Freya. Wrapped in a brown leaf, she found a field mouse’s little door. The kind mouse welcomed her into a warm room full of stories. In the mole’s tunnel, Freya found a swallow cold and still. She wove a hay blanket and listened for his heartbeat. All winter she cared for him, until his wings grew strong again. The swallow offered Freya a ride towards the warm countries. She tied her sash safely to a feather and climbed aboard. Forests, seas and snowy mountains rolled below their brave little journey. Beside a blue lake, the swallow set Freya on a white flower. A tiny flower king greeted her as a friend. Here, among people her own size, she could finally feel at home. The flower people brought gifts, including shimmering white wings. Freya fluttered from bloom to bloom, laughing with her new friends. Above them, the swallow sang a farewell before flying towards his northern home.
