Thunder rolled as Maya wheeled towards a walled town. Rain pattered on her cloak, but a warm castle window shone ahead. She followed its light, hoping someone would open the gate. The old king opened the gate himself, holding a lantern high. Water dripped from Maya’s curls and shoes. “I am a princess,” she said. The king smiled and welcomed her out of the rain. Wrapped in a warm blanket, Maya peeped into the guest room. The queen placed one green pea on the bare bedstead. Beside her lay a mountain of bedding. What was she planning? Servants carried in twenty mattresses, then twenty soft eiderdowns. Up and up the bedding rose while the queen directed them. The bed nearly reached the ceiling. Surely nobody could feel a pea beneath all that! With help, Maya settled into the towering bed. Her purple wheelchair waited nearby. Moonlight crossed the quilts, but something hard kept her awake. How could such a soft bed feel so uncomfortable? At breakfast, the royal family asked how Maya had slept. “Hardly at all,” she admitted with a yawn. “Something hard was hiding under me!” The queen and king exchanged astonished smiles across the sunny table. “Only a real princess could notice that tiny pea!” said the queen. Maya received a little golden circlet. The prince bowed and welcomed her as his friend. At last, the castle felt like home. The pea went into a glass case in the royal museum. Maya and the prince smiled at its velvet cushion. Such a tiny thing had started their friendship! Perhaps it is still there today.
