The king shut Arthur in a tower full of straw. A spinning wheel waited in the middle. “Gold by morning!” he declared. Arthur looked at the straw and wondered where to begin. A little man appeared at the door. “What will you give me to spin?” he asked. Arthur offered his necklace, and the stranger smiled. Perhaps this impossible night would have an answer after all. Whirr went the wheel, three times round. Golden thread filled the bobbin while Arthur watched in wonder. By sunrise, every stalk glittered. The king was delighted, but asked for still more. On the third night, Arthur had nothing left to offer. The spinner asked for his little pet lamb instead. Arthur agreed in worry, then wished at once that he had found another way. Later, the spinner returned for the lamb. Arthur offered treasures instead, but the little man shook his head. “Guess my name within three days,” he said. Arthur hugged his woolly friend close. Arthur sent a messenger to gather names across the land. He tried Caspar, Melchior, even Sheepshanks. “Not my name!” laughed the spinner. The list grew longer, but Arthur refused to stop thinking. The messenger returned from the forest with astonishing news. A little man had danced beside a fire, singing his own name! Arthur listened carefully. At last, a small smile lit his face. “Conrad? Harry?” Arthur asked when the spinner arrived. “Or perhaps Rumpelstiltskin?” The little man stamped his foot into the floor in surprise. The lamb stayed safely home, and Arthur never forgot the lesson.
