Every page of Leo’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Leo threaded through the loud, colorful market with empty pockets and curious eyes. He admired a pyramid of sticky dates, blue bowls, and jingling bells. Though he had no coins, Leo felt rich in wonders. Leo spotted a stranger in a dark cloak beside an iron ring set in the paving stones. The stranger held out a silver coin. “Fetch one small thing from the cave below,” he said. Leo looked from the coin to the ring and listened carefully. Leo spoke the secret word the stranger had whispered. A stone door groaned open in the rocky hill, and warm golden light rose from below. Leo took a deep breath and peered down the glowing steps. Beneath the market, Leo found a cave sparkling with ancient treasure. In the middle lay a small, plain lamp, dusty with age. Leo knelt in a sunbeam and rubbed it clean with his sleeve. With a puff and a swirl, a genie rose from Leo’s lamp. “I can grant three wishes,” the genie said with a kind smile. Leo gazed up in amazement as blue smoke curled like a friendly cloud. Leo made his first wish for the simplest thing in the world: “Please let me be safely outside, on my own street.” Whoosh! Leo stood beneath the sky again, clutching the lamp and smiling with relief. For his second wish, Leo asked for a home where his family could welcome everyone. Where an empty lot had stood, a shining palace appeared. A grand feast waited inside, and the whole street came to share it. A greedy merchant heard about Leo’s marvelous lamp and guessed where it had come from. He walked down the street calling, “New lamps for old!” Leo spotted him below and held the dusty lamp close, feeling suspicious. Leo knew the merchant wanted more than an old lamp. With a whisper to a flying carpet, Leo slipped away before the trick could work. Snug aboard the carpet, Leo laughed as the merchant stared up from far below. Leo looked at the genie and knew what his last wish would be. “You have helped us enough,” Leo said. “I wish you to be free.” The genie became a shower of bright sparks in the sky, and Leo waved goodbye with a happy heart.
