Mother held out a basket of cake for Grandmother. Lily reached for it in her bright red cloak. “Keep to the path,” Mother said, “and do not stop to talk to anyone.” Lily set off along the forest path, her basket swinging gently on one arm. Her red cloak shone brightly among the trees. Above her, leaves whispered, and a robin sang. A grey wolf stepped out between the trees. “Where are you going?” he asked in a friendly voice. “To Grandmother’s cottage,” Lily answered, not noticing the sly sparkle in his eyes. “Grandmother would love those flowers,” the wolf said sweetly, pointing far off the path. Lily looked at the glowing blossoms. She forgot the warning and stepped aside to pick a bunch. Lily gathered flowers while the wolf took the short way through the trees. He reached Grandmother’s cottage first. Finding nobody inside, he slipped in and put on her nightcap. At the cottage, Lily stared: “What big ears, what big eyes—and what big teeth you have!” The wolf threw off Grandmother’s nightcap. Lily hurried toward the open door, calling, “Wolf! Help!” The woodcutter heard Lily and raised his arm. “Away, wolf!” he called, sending it running out of the woods for good. Lily pointed after it as Grandmother appeared, safe and sound. Lily shared the cake with Grandmother and the woodcutter at the table. The wildflowers stood in a jug, bright as little suns. Next time, Lily would remember the path.
