The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
High in a round room at the top of a tall tower lived Rose. The tower had no door at all. Every year, her golden hair grew longer, until it tumbled all the way to the grass. Each week a witch called, 'Rose, let down your hair!' and climbed up the long golden braid. 'The world outside is not safe,' she warned. 'Stay here, where nothing can reach you.' One night, Rose saw a thousand golden lanterns floating up from a faraway kingdom. They glowed like slow, sleepy stars. 'I am ready,' Rose whispered. 'I want to see them for myself.' The next morning, a lost traveller stopped below and walked all around the tower, puzzled. 'Hello up there, where is the door?' he called. Rose giggled, 'There isn't one, but I know another way!' Rose tied her golden braid to the iron hook on the windowsill. Then, hand over hand, she climbed down, feet steady against the warm stone. Down, down, down she went, brave and careful. At last, Rose took her very first steps on real grass, and it tickled her bare toes! The traveller bowed hello. That tower had never been safe at all, only lonely, and the world felt wide and kind. Through forests and over rivers they went, and friendly strangers waved hello. That night, Rose stood by the harbour as a thousand lanterns rose all around her. She lifted her own lantern high. In the morning, Rose braided her long hair and coiled it over her shoulder. She looked back once at the empty tower. Then she turned her back on it and walked down the road into the kingdom, home for good.
