The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
High above the green forest stood a round tower with no door. Mateo lived in its one round room, and every year his golden hair grew longer, until it tumbled all the way down the wall. Each evening Witch Grimsby called, “Mateo, let down your braid!” Up she climbed, hand over hand. “The world outside is wild and dangerous,” she warned. “Stay here, where it's safe.” On his birthday night, Mateo saw a thousand lanterns float up from a faraway kingdom, glowing like golden fish in the sky. He pressed his chin to the sill. “I'm ready,” he whispered. “I want to see them close.” The next morning, a lost traveller named Rosa rode by and called up to the window. “Excuse me,” she said, “but where is your door?” Mateo blinked, because nobody had ever asked him that before. There was no door, so Mateo made one. He tied his golden braid to the iron hook on the sill, took a deep breath, and climbed down, hand over hand, all the way down the tower wall. At last Mateo stood at the foot of the tower, and the grass tickled his bare toes. “It isn't scary at all!” he laughed. Rosa nodded. “That tower never kept danger out; it only kept you in.” By nightfall, Mateo stood beside the glittering harbour as a thousand lanterns rose all around him. He lifted his very own lantern high, made a wish, and let it float up to join the stars. Mateo braided his long hair and coiled it over his shoulder. Behind him the tower stood empty, and when Witch Grimsby called, no braid would come down. Mateo walked on towards the kingdom, smiling.
