Snow sparkled over the town square as everyone counted down to midnight. Then the great old clock went clunk! Its hands juddered and stopped at 11:59. The crowd gasped, and Mateo stared up in wonder. Mateo lifted his little lantern and pushed open the tower door. Up and up the narrow stairs he climbed, round and round. The shadows were deep, but his lantern glowed warm and brave. At the top, among giant brass gears, Mateo found two surprising friends. Tired Old Year sat with his sack of memories. Tiny Baby New Year giggled on a cog. But the stuck clock kept them apart! SQUEEEAK! went one stubborn cog. Old Year covered his ears, and Baby New Year giggled and bounced. Mateo found a little oil can and gave the cog three careful drips. Drip, drip, drip! But the clock still needed winding, and the key was lost! Baby New Year pointed to the window. There, glinting in the snow on the ledge, Mateo spotted a little brass key. He held it high! Mateo turned the key, and the gears began to whirr. He held out his hand and guided Baby New Year across to Old Year. "Thank you, Old Year, and goodbye!" Mateo said softly. Tick, tock! The old clock woke up. BONG, BONG, BONG went the great bells, twelve times in all. Fireworks bloomed over the snowy town, and Mateo cheered with all his heart. Baby New Year floated down, giggling. "For you, Mateo," Baby whispered, "the very first wish of the year!" A glowing golden star dropped into Mateo's hands. Happy New Year, Mateo!
