Every page of Nora’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Nora was six, and she longed to see the royal ball. But her household rode away, leaving her to sweep the hearth and wash the bowls. “Perhaps next time,” she whispered. In the kitchen garden, Nora met her fairy godmother. One wave turned a pumpkin into a golden carriage! “You may go to the ball,” she said, “but be home by midnight.” Nora watched the wand draw light from hem to shoulder. Her apron and patched dress shimmered into a silver-blue gown. She closed her eyes in wonder, then peeked at two sparkling glass slippers. Nora curtsied, and the prince bowed with a smile. All evening they danced, twirling apart and laughing at their silly steps. Not once did Nora think about the time. Bong! The great clock began to strike twelve. Nora hurried down the stairs and ran for the door as the last chime fell. One glass slipper stayed behind, shining on a step. Next morning, the prince carried the glass slipper from door to door, down every street in the kingdom. Nora watched from her doorway as his footman offered it on a cushion. Would they reach her? Nora sat on a low bench and slid her own foot into the glass slipper. It fitted exactly as it always had! The prince smiled. “There you are,” he said. Nora returned to the palace, walking beside the prince. The whole kingdom cheered for the girl who had danced and laughed. Gown or apron, she was still Nora, and she was welcome.
