The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
On a freezing January night, Rose's stepmother pointed at the snowy forest. "Bring us violets!" she snapped. Lazy Holena giggled at the window. Brave Rose took her empty basket and stepped out into the swirling snow. Rose climbed up and up until she saw a great fire on the mountain top. Twelve Months sat on stones around it. Old January held his staff. "Please, may I warm my hands?" Rose asked politely. Old January smiled and passed his staff to young Brother March. March waved it over the fire. Whoosh! The snow melted away, and purple violets popped up all around Rose's toes. Rose hurried home with a basket full of sweet-smelling violets. Her stepmother's mouth fell open. Holena's eyes grew round as buttons. "Violets in January?" they gasped. "Now go and fetch strawberries!" Holena demanded. Back on the mountain, Brother June raised the staff. The snow turned into a green summer meadow, and red strawberries ripened in the sunshine. Rose filled her apron, humming happily. Next, Holena wanted apples. So Brother September waved the staff, and an apple tree heavy with red apples rose from the snow. Rose gave one gentle shake. Plop! Plop! Two apples fell. Greedy Holena and the stepmother stomped up the mountain, demanding more. Old January frowned and raised his staff. A whirling snowstorm hid the path! Far below, Rose set a lantern glowing in her window. Following Rose's lantern and the Months' twinkling starlight, Holena and the stepmother found their way home safe. "We're sorry, Rose," they said softly. From then on, they shared the warm fire and red apples together.
