On a dry, dusty hillside, Ava found three billy goats: one small, one medium and one very large. Far beyond the wooden bridge, a lush green meadow shimmered in the sun. Ava pointed to the arched wooden bridge, and the goats gathered close behind her. Then a comical grumble rumbled from underneath, and a nose like a turnip poked out of the shadows. The smallest goat trotted over the bridge, trip-trap, trip-trap, while Ava waited on the near bank. Beneath the arch, a round-eyed troll peered out and watched the little hooves. Next the middle goat clip-clopped onto the bridge. He politely asked the hairy troll to wait for the biggest goat, who stood beside Ava on the bank, calm and patient. Then the biggest goat stepped onto the bridge, his great curling horns held high. Ava watched from beside the willow tree, well back from the water, as a shadowy face appeared below. The big goat stamped his hooves, boom! The startled troll's hat flew off, and he tumbled onto a soft green moss bank by the brook, quite unhurt. Ava's eyes grew wide. Now the way was clear. Ava beckoned with her hand and led all three goats over the bridge, small, medium and large, into the bright green pasture full of wildflowers. The three goats nibbled sweet clover in the sunshine. Ava waved goodbye to them all. Far away on a hilltop, the troll sat grumbling, staying well away from the bridge.
