Freddie and Mum sat at the nursery table and opened a plain toy box. Among the wooden toys stood one small tin soldier. He had only one leg, but he stood very straight. On the tabletop the soldier faced a paper ballerina beside a cardboard castle. Freddie peeked from behind the table and smiled. The soldier looked at her and did not wobble once. Later Freddie and Mum stood by the closed window and looked down through the glass. There lay the tiny soldier on a soft flowerbed, safe among the leaves. Mum said, Let's go and fetch him. Outside, rain ran along a shallow gutter. The soldier stood tall in a folded paper boat and set off. Freddie and Mum watched from the dry path, far back, and cheered him on. The paper boat floated past a small grey rat sitting calmly on a dry stone beside a covered drain. The rat only blinked. The soldier nodded politely and sailed on, one leg straight. Then, as in the old tale, a big friendly fish swam beside the boat in the clear, gentle water. The soldier stood safe and steady. The fish glided along with him, round-eyed and kind. In the bright kitchen Mum set the little soldier on a clean cloth beside a whole fish on a plate. Freddie watched from across the table and gasped. The soldier was home again, still standing tall. Back in the nursery Freddie and Mum placed the soldier and the paper ballerina on a low shelf. A small paper heart and the cardboard castle stood beside them. Freddie whispered goodnight to them both.
