The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Emily and Kai grew roses in boxes between their attic windows. 'Beware the Snow Queen,' Grandmother said, rocking. 'She flies with the snowflakes.' Emily sniffed a rose and smiled. Then a glittering splinter from a troll's magic mirror flew into Kai's eye. 'Ow!' He frowned at the roses. 'They're ugly,' he snapped. Emily tilted her head. Kai felt cold and cross. In the town square, Kai tied his sled to a great white sleigh. Whoosh! The Snow Queen swept him into the snowstorm. 'Kai!' called Emily. Then she set off alone, sailing down the river. Emily slipped away from a sleepy flower garden and thanked a kind prince and princess. At the robbers' castle, the pigeons cooed, 'Kai went north!' So the robber girl cut the reindeer free. North galloped the reindeer, with Emily on his back. They stopped to warm up with the Lapland woman and the Finn woman. Above them, the northern lights danced green and pink. At last Emily tiptoed into the ice palace. In the great hall, Kai sat alone on a frozen lake, blue with cold, puzzling over pieces of ice. He did not even look up. Emily knelt and cried for her friend. One warm tear fell and melted Kai's frozen heart. Kai cried too, and out washed the splinter! 'Emily!' he gasped. He remembered everything. Emily and Kai walked home together, and it was summer! Roses bloomed in the window boxes, and Grandmother sat reading in the sun. Emily laughed. Home was the warmest place of all.
