The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
In the Van Tassel barn, lanterns glowed and the fiddler played. Lanky Ichabod Crane danced near Katrina, all elbows and knees. Finn stomped and twirled too! By the door, Brom Bones watched with a sly grin. By the crackling fire, Brom Bones spread his arms wide. "The Headless Horseman rides to the bridge by the church!" Ichabod's knees knocked, clack-clack. Finn listened with wide, wide eyes. Late that night, Finn rode home on his shaggy pony beside Ichabod on old Gunpowder. Hoo-hoo, hooted an owl. Creak, creak, went the branches. Finn held his reins tight and hummed a brave little tune. Then a tall rider stepped from the shadows on a black horse. His great cloak rose so high, no head showed at all! A jack-o'-lantern grinned on his saddle. Finn whispered, "Hello?" "To the bridge!" cried Ichabod. Finn tapped his pony and off they galloped. Clatter-clatter went the hooves on the wooden planks by the white church. Behind them came the cloaked rider, clip-clop, clip-clop. At the end of the bridge, Finn turned to look. The rider raised the glowing pumpkin and tossed it high! It floated through the moonlight in a soft, gentle arc. Finn reached up his arms. Plop! The pumpkin landed softly in Finn's arms. The rider pushed down his tall collar, and there was Brom Bones, grinning! "Happy Halloween!" he laughed, and Finn giggled right back. Next morning, Katrina served pumpkin pie at the Van Tassel table. Brom and Ichabod laughed and laughed about the prank. And Finn? He kept the grinning jack-o'-lantern, right beside his plate.
