The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
On snowy Christmas Eve, Ada rolls the gingerbread dough, flat and smooth. She cuts a little man with her cutter. Two currants make his eyes, and three icing buttons march down his tummy. Ding! Ada opens the warm oven door. Out leaps the Gingerbread Man, wiggling his arms and blinking his currant eyes! Before Ada can say hello, he dashes for the door. Down the snowy lane he races, singing, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" The old woman and old man puff behind. Ada runs too, boots crunching. Past a frosty meadow he zooms. The cow lumbers after him, and so do a horse and the farmers. Ada climbs the fence, quick as a robin. "Wait for me!" At the wide river the Gingerbread Man stops, and Ada is still far behind. A sly fox smiles. "I'll carry you across on my back," he purrs. The Gingerbread Man looks at the cold water. Halfway across, the water gets deeper. "Hop onto my nose," says the fox, "to keep your feet dry." Up goes the Gingerbread Man, right to the tip. Ada races down the snowy bank. "Fox! I can see you!" Ada calls, loud and brave. The fox lowers his nose, and the Gingerbread Man hops onto a stepping stone. Caught out, the sly fox slinks off into the reeds. "I'm sorry I boasted," says the Gingerbread Man. Back home, Ada sits by the glowing tree, and he sits beside her on a cushion. Now he is not running away. He is her Christmas friend.
