The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Snow fell softly on the little town. In the shoemaker's shop, Isla looked at the very last piece of leather. "Only enough for one pair," she whispered. Christmas was coming. That night, Father cut the last leather by candlelight. Isla laid each piece neatly on the bench, side by side. "Goodnight, little shoes," she said, and tiptoed off to bed. At dawn, Isla ran into the workshop in her nightgown. She stopped and gasped. There on the bench stood a perfect pair of shoes, every stitch tiny and neat! A fine gentleman tried on the shoes and beamed. "Splendid!" he cried, and paid in shining gold coins. Isla counted them twice. Now they could buy leather for two more pairs! Every morning, more shoes appeared. On Christmas Eve, Isla hid behind the curtain. At midnight, two tiny elves in thin rags hopped onto the bench, stitching faster than snowflakes fall! "They must be so cold," said Isla. So she and the shoemaker's wife sewed by the fire: tiny shirts, trousers, waistcoats, woolly stockings, and two pairs of tiny shoes. At midnight, the elves found the gifts. They pulled on shirts and shoes and twirled with joy. Singing, they danced across the bench and out into the snowy night. Isla smiled. The elves never came back, but the shop was never empty again. On Christmas morning, Isla and the shoemaker shared warm bread and cocoa. "Thank you, little friends," Isla whispered.
