It was Mia's birthday! Balloons bobbed, presents piled high, and everyone wore a paper party hat. Family and friends sat all around the table, smiling at Mia.
Here came the cake, with two bright candles. Mia closed her eyes tight and made a secret wish. Then she took a big breath and blew, whoosh, out went the candles!
A curl of smoke twirled up and up, and became a tiny glowing star! "Hello, Mia," it twinkled. Nobody else could see it. Only Mia.
The star sprinkled sparkles, and Mia shrank as small as a strawberry! She sailed a paper boat across the pink punch, past bobbing lemon slices. "Hurry," the star whispered, "we must be back before the cake is cut."
Pop! Mia was big again, holding a bunch of balloons. Up, up she floated, over the garden, over the rooftops, over the whole sleepy town. Mia laughed as the wind tickled her toes.
The balloons landed where wishes glow like lanterns, and Mia found her very own. Bunny gave a ribbon, Bird sang a song, and Bear gave a soft, warm hug.
Ding went the clock, and whoosh! Mia slipped back into her chair just as the cake was cut. Nobody noticed she had been away. Mia smiled her secret smile.
Ding-dong! The doorbell rang. There stood Grandma, all the way from far away, and Mia ran to her. That was Mia's secret wish, and it came true!
