Charlotte walked into a quiet village with an empty wooden bowl and a canvas satchel. At one cottage she knocked, but the woman behind the half-door smiled sadly and said she had nothing to spare. At the stone well, Charlotte asked an old fire keeper to lend her an iron pot. She held up a clean, smooth stone in her open palm and promised a wonderful stone soup. The fire keeper kept a small fire crackling under the pot. Charlotte filled it with cold water from the bucket and carefully lowered the clean stone in, curious to see what would happen. Villagers gathered round the steaming pot, peeking over each other's shoulders. Charlotte sniffed and said the soup would be especially good with a carrot, and one neighbor held out a bright orange one. Soon more villagers came to the shared table. They brought a basket of potatoes, a string of onions and a bowl of beans, and Charlotte thanked each of them with a big smile. The fire keeper stirred the steaming vegetable soup with a long wooden spoon. Charlotte set a row of bowls and golden loaves of bread along the long table, and the smell drifted down the lane. With the fire keeper's help, Charlotte lifted the clean stone out on a ladle. Then she filled bowl after bowl, and every villager received real, hot vegetable soup. Everyone sat together at the long outdoor table, passing crusty bread and laughing. Charlotte smiled, for together they had discovered how much they had to share, all begun with one little stone.
