In sunny Myra, boats bobbed in the harbour. Kind Bishop Nicholas was sharing warm bread with hungry people. "I need a helper," he said. Olivia stepped forward and said, "I can help!" Past the olive trees, Olivia and Nicholas passed a small stone house. Inside, a father and his three daughters sat at an empty table. "We will never have a happy future," the girls sighed. That evening, the oil lamp glowed golden. Olivia and Nicholas filled little leather purses with shiny gold coins. Clink, clink, clink! "This will be our secret," Nicholas whispered. Late at night, the moon was round and silver. Olivia held the lantern and tiptoed through the quiet streets. Nicholas followed, a purse hidden under his cloak, and nobody saw them at all. The family's window was open wide. Olivia took a big breath and tossed the purse inside. Plop! Then she and Nicholas hurried away into the shadows, giggling, before anyone could see. On the third night, the shutters were shut tight. "Now what?" whispered Nicholas. Olivia pointed up at the chimney! Down dropped the purse, and gold spilled into the stockings drying by the fire. Suddenly the door flew open, and the father ran out! Olivia held her breath. Nicholas raised a finger to his lips. The father nodded, tears of thanks shining, and promised to keep their secret. Soon the three daughters danced with music and flowers, their future bright and happy. Olivia smiled, keeping her secret close. And now, across Myra, stockings hang by every fire, waiting for surprises.
