In the misty Catskill hills, Arthur found an old man yawning under a huge chestnut tree. His long white beard spilled over his knees. He said, sleepily, that he was Rip Van Winkle. Arthur picked up a sturdy branch and held it out with both hands as a walking stick. Rip rose slowly and frowned at the overgrown path. Why did his old trail look so different? Arthur and Rip walked side by side down the winding trail, away from the blue hills. Far below, rooftops and chimneys shone in the valley. Rip did not know a single house. In the sunny village square stood a large inn with a bright signboard. Arthur helped Rip compare it with his memory of a small, sleepy tavern. Curious villagers watched quietly. Arthur looked up and politely asked a kindly villager about Rip's family. As the answers came, Rip stroked his long beard and slowly understood that many years had passed. At a garden gate, Rip's grown daughter Judith gasped, then opened her arms wide. She knew her father at last! Arthur smiled beside them as they hugged. On Judith's porch, Rip rocked in his chair and told Arthur a strange tale. Mountain ninepin players had enchanted him, and he had slept for twenty years! Arthur listened wide-eyed. Soon Arthur and the village friends gathered on the sunny porch to hear Rip's gentle stories. Judith rested a hand on his shoulder. Everyone was glad that Rip was finally home.
