The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
The night before school, Oliver could not sleep. His new backpack and shiny new shoes waited by the bed. His tummy fluttered with butterflies, half excited and half nervous. Tomorrow was the big day! In the morning, Oliver's grown-up walked him to the school gate. The building looked enormous, with a hundred shining windows. Oliver held on tight to his backpack straps and took a deep breath. At the classroom door stood Miss Rosa, crouching low with a sunny smile. "Good morning, Oliver!" she said, and she knew every child's name. Oliver hung his backpack on a hook shaped like a star. Then Oliver spotted a girl sitting all alone by the window. Her name tag said Mia. She was twisting her fingers, just like Oliver's butterflies were twisting inside. Maybe she felt nervous too. Oliver's knees wobbled, but he sat down across from Mia. "Would you like the purple crayon?" he asked softly. Mia smiled. Side by side, they painted rainbows, and soon they were friends. Crash! Mia's tall block tower tumbled down, and her lip trembled. Oliver was brave. "We can build it again!" he said. Block by block, it grew taller than ever, and the whole class clapped. On the big window, the paper butterflies the class had made began to wiggle. Then, flutter, flutter, they flew up into the sunshine! Oliver's tummy butterflies flew away with them, light as a song. At home time, Oliver's grown-up was waiting at the gate. Oliver ran out smiling, holding his rainbow painting up high. "I made a friend!" he cheered. "Can I come back tomorrow?"
