Every page of Maya’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Maya cleaned the stables and never dreamed of crowns. Grown knights had tugged at the sword in the stone for years. Maya rolled up, gripped it, leaned back hard, and out slid Excalibur! In the great cathedral, the whole kingdom watched as Maya was crowned. The crown was so big it slipped right down over her nose! Maya pushed it up, grinned, and wheeled down the aisle. At Camelot, Maya asked for a round table with no head and no foot. "Here," she said, "nobody sits higher than anybody else." The bravest knights took their seats, and Maya parked her purple wheels among them. A giant stomped through the valley, squashing crops. The knights reached for swords, but Maya waved instead. "Why so stompy?" she called, and the giant sniffed, "My boots pinch!" So the village cobblers made him soft new slippers! Then Sir Gareth and Sir Bors fell out over a strip of land. Each one said it was his. Now they would not even sit in the same room! Maya looked from one cross face to the other. Maya didn't know who was right, so she asked for help: "What do you each need?" Gareth needed grass, and Bors needed water. They could share! Asking, Maya learned, was real strength. Around the round table, every knight raised a hand to make a promise. Maya raised hers first. "We will protect, we will listen, and we will always tell the truth." Every voice rang out together. Soon the fields were green and busy again, and the roads were safe for every wagon and wheel. Maya looked out over it all from her favorite hill. Camelot was a quiet, happy place to be from.
