The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Oliver rode his brave pony up to a town with its gate shut tight. "Turn back, little knight!" called the people on the walls. "A dragon lives in the lake, and every day it wants one of us!" In the market square, everyone drew a stone from the old clay jar. Then a hush fell. The princess held up the stone with the black mark. Oliver watched her chin tremble, and he made up his mind. Oliver left his sword on his saddle and rode out to the lake alone. "Hello, Dragon!" he called, holding up his empty hands. "I have come to talk, not to fight." The dragon blinked one huge golden eye. "Why do you want a person every day?" asked Oliver. The dragon sighed a puff of steam. "I don't want a person. I just want my dinner! Everyone runs away before I can ask for some." Oliver set down a basket full of bread, apples and cheese. "No more sending people," he said. "The kingdom will share its food instead, and you will leave us in peace." The dragon bowed its great head. But the next morning, the dragon reared up and roared, "Is that promise really true?" Oliver did not run. He raised his shield, held his lance steady, and said, "A promise is a promise. Wait and see." The great bolt slid back, and the gate swung open for the first time in a whole year. Out came the townspeople, carrying baskets to share. Oliver grinned as the sunlight poured in. Now the fields are green and busy again. The lake is just a lake, good for skipping stones. And the dragon? It naps on the far shore, waves to Oliver, and makes a perfectly good neighbour.
