Rose stood in a wide sunny meadow and looked up. Over the valley, a rainbow arched across the sky, but its colors were pale and fading like chalk. “Oh,” whispered Rose, “what happened to your beautiful shine?” At the meadow’s edge, a shy unicorn stepped from behind a flowering bush. “Playful storm clouds scattered seven glowing color crystals,” it said softly. “Without them, the rainbow bridge cannot shine.” Rose listened with kind, thoughtful eyes. Rose heard a tiny thump in the meadow grass. Kneeling down, Rose found a small rabbit caught beneath a fallen branch and gently lifted it free. Where the rabbit had been, a red crystal glowed among the blades of grass. With the red crystal safe, Rose followed a mossy trail deeper into the trees. The unicorn trotted alongside at a friendly distance. Soon they reached a clear forest stream, skipping over smooth, round stones. At the water’s edge, Rose found a fox cub tangled in reeds. Rose carefully worked the reeds free, and the cub scampered safely onto the bank. Beneath the clear water, two glowing crystals winked among the stones. The trail led Rose and the unicorn into a shaded woodland where the trees grew close together. Above the high canopy, the last faint gray storm clouds still drifted. Rose held the crystals close and gave the unicorn a brave smile. A small bird called from below a low branch, and Rose found it waiting beneath its nest. Rose rose on tiptoe and gently set the bird back on the branch. In the mossy hollow of an old tree, four last crystals glowed softly. At sunset, Rose and the unicorn returned to the meadow. Rose held the final violet crystal up to the tip of the unicorn’s lowered horn. “You can do it,” Rose said, smiling warmly. The unicorn’s horn glowed brighter and brighter. Then the whole rainbow bloomed across the sky in every color at once, bright and complete over the valley. Rose laughed with delight as the colors sang in the light. Rose sat in the meadow grass beside the unicorn, with a comfortable space between them. Together they watched the mended rainbow glow over the quiet valley. “Kindness brings color back,” Rose said, and the unicorn’s eyes shone.
