Finn's father, the miller, left the mill to the eldest brother and the donkey to the next. Little Finn got only a cat. "Don't worry," purred the cat. "I am a very clever cat!" The cat asked Finn for just two things: fine boots and a sturdy sack. Finn's eyes went wide as the cat pulled on a boot. "Now," said the cat, "off to make our fortune!" At the palace, the cat bowed low and opened the sack. "A gift from the Marquis of Carabas!" The king smiled. Nobody had heard that name before. Finn peeked in from the door and giggled. One sunny day, the cat whispered, "Finn, hop in the river for a swim!" Splash! Finn waded in, cool and giggly. Just then, the king's carriage came rolling down the road. "Help! Help!" cried the cat. "The Marquis was robbed of his clothes while swimming!" The king sent for a fine new suit at once. Finn stood wrapped in a big cloth, grinning. The cat reached the ogre's castle. "I hear you can turn into a lion," said the cat. "But surely nothing small, like a mouse?" The proud ogre went POOF! Finn gasped at the tiny mouse. The cat did not pounce. "Shoo, shoo!" it called, and chased the squeaking mouse right out the gate. Clang! The gate shut for good. Finn came running up the road, cheering. The king's carriage arrived. There stood Finn, the Marquis of Carabas, in fine clothes at his very own castle. "Welcome home!" said Finn. From that day on, Finn and his clever cat lived happily in their castle.
